Hilton Theatre
New York, New York

The Ford Center for the Performing Arts, renamed the Hilton Theatre in 2005, was created from the former Lyric and Apollo theatres to accommodate modern Broadway musicals.

The challenge for SMS in this interior-design project was to reflect the historic spirit of the demolished theatres yet project an identity of its own. The new and coherent aesthetic reflects original motifs and color palettes found in both theatres. Crystal chandeliers and wall sconces, damask-covered wall panels, and woven wool axminster carpet defer to glorious islands of original detail.

The proscenium, side wall boxes, and centerpiece dome were preserved from the Apollo. The new lobby includes a 650-square-foot mosaic designed by SMS and inspired by the Lyric's exterior classical masks. The mosaic is composed of 172,800 handcut marble pieces, fabricated by 18 artisans.

Custom light fixtures include bare carbon filament bulbs of 1903, creating a candle-like glow. The new Hilton Theatre feels like an old fixture on Broadway, reflecting a traditional approach to theatre design.

"…Incredibly, the theatre actually seems to be aging as it nears completion..." ~ NY Times
