John F. Kennedy Center Concert Hall
Washington, DC

The nation's newest arts center concert hall is actually a renovation project. The original 1970s space had to be updated to meet the changing needs of musicians and patrons, to provide a warmer and more aesthetically pleasing environment, and to serve as a model for ADA solutions. The Kennedy Center Concert Hall is home to the National Symphony Orchestra and is host to hundreds of events yearly, requiring space on stage for as many as 300 performers. The seating plan incorporates a barrier-free circulation pattern, hailed by syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer, a disabled journalist, as a model for accessibility.
