 The intention
of the 2002 Neil Simon Theatre rehabilitation was to expedite entry
to and exit from the theatre and to provide increased accessibility
for disabled patrons.
The SMS design increases the seating capacity (and revenue for the owner),
and expands the toilet facilities in the basement and the balcony, tripling
the ladies rooms. As a result of these changes, intermissions can be
expedited, ensuring that the show will not require overtime pay for
the crew.
A side alley was redesigned to add exit doors, allowing patrons to enter
and exit more quickly, and providing them a 'gallery experience' of
show posters from the Simon (originally the Alvin) including Cole Porter's
Anything Goes, in 1934; Life With Father, in 1947
(the longest running straight play on Broadway); the wildly popular
Mister Roberts, starring Henry Fonda; and The Great White
Hope, starring James Earl Jones. Currently, the hit musical Hairspray
is in its third year run at the Simon.
