National Museum of the American Indian
Washington, DC

The National Museum of the American Indian is the Smithsonian's last major construction on the Mall in Washington, DC (see case study).

The SMS-designed auditorium with apron stage is round in shape, to honor the tradition of Indian ceremonies that take place in a circle. The theatre accommodates music and dance, theatre, storytelling, and panel discussions, as well as the museum's signature film.

The stage configuration includes a system of architectural panels that provide multiple options for space arrangement, offering significant adaptability.
