Waterbury Palace Theatre and Performing Arts Magnet School
Waterbury, Connecticut

There once was a stream running beneath the historic Palace Theatre in Waterbury, Connecticut. In 2003, excavation for the renovation of the theatre required the brook to be completely rerouted! A specially engineered culvert was designed to implement this ambitious plan, and in late 2004 audiences gathered where fishes once swam.

Sachs Morgan Studio provided theatre planning and design services as well as interior design and architectural lighting for the project. SMS worked with Naugatuck Valley Development Corporation and Kaestle Boos Architects to rehabilitate and restore the 2687-seat theatre, which boasts a completely new stage house to accommodate a wide range of entertainment events for the community. The theatre is also available to the 800 middle- and high-school students who attend the adjoining performing arts magnet school.

The Waterbury Performing Arts Magnet School is changing the landscape of downtown Waterbury. The school includes a modified thrust stage with 225 seats, a 100-seat recital hall, and a dance performance space that accommodates 125. Other components include rehearsal studios and practice rooms for instrumental and vocal use as well as scenery and costume shops and a library/listening room. The Palace Theatre, a registered National Historic treasure, and the new school facilities opened in the fall of 2004.
