Walter Kerr
New York, New York

Sachs Morgan Studio was hired by Jujamcyn Theatres to provide interior design and architectural lighting services for the 1921 hard-to-rent 1000-seat Ritz Theatre. The 1990 restoration set the precedent for renovations that would transform Broadway over the next decade. The Kerr established that the value of a theatre space is defined not only by seating capacity but also by good design, a core value at SMS.

The playhouse, renamed for theatre critic Walter Kerr prior to his passing in 1996, is now known as the jewel in the Broadway playhouse crown. It has become home to Pulitzer Prize-winning hits such as August Wilson's The Piano Lesson, Tony Kushner's Angels in America, David Auburn's Proof, Terrence McNally's Tony Award-winning Love! Valour! Compassion! and John Patrck Shanley's Doubt.

"Though the Kerr had the same architect … as most other handsome Broadway theatres of its period, few, if any, of the others have been restored with such scrupulous fidelity to the original decorative details, from carpet pattern to pressed-copper marquee." ~ New York Times, March 14, 1990

1994 Broadway Theater History Preservation Award, Broadway Theater Institute
